The starting point

The revised quality-management standard is published. Use the current UKAS timetable to separate your implementation work, your certification body’s accreditation status and the final client transition deadline.

What the dated sources establish

ISO 9001:2026 was published on 16 September 2026. The source event for this briefing is UKAS revision 1 of its transition bulletin, dated 7 October 2026. The UKAS certified-client deadline is 30 September 2029.

UKAS identifies 16 March 2028 as the cutoff for accepting new applications to the previous edition. That is a different event from the 31 March 2028 restriction on new and initial accredited certifications described by ISO/TC 176 and Global ACI. Record each milestone with its meaning.

Build a change-to-evidence map

Our practical recommendation is to start with the actual revised requirements and your existing processes. Give each relevant change an owner, an impact decision and evidence that would show the change has been implemented. An unchanged process can be an appropriate conclusion if the reasoning is recorded.

Use the map to plan targeted internal audit sampling. If a change concerns how decisions are made, a revised policy may be insufficient on its own; identify a recent decision or operating record that demonstrates the arrangement.

  • Record the edition used, affected process, current evidence and remaining action.
  • Ask process owners to explain what will change in daily work.
  • Schedule evidence collection before the internal review of transition readiness.
  • Bring unresolved resources and responsibilities to management review.

Check the body and the scope

A new edition’s publication does not establish that a particular certification body has completed its accreditation transition. UKAS says certificates to the new edition must not be described as accredited before its positive transition decision.

For your own planning, ask the chosen body to confirm the relevant accreditation scope, its transition route and the evidence it expects. Keep that response with the programme rather than relying solely on a general deadline.

Make one useful decision now

Prepare an audit brief with your current scope, existing certificate details and target assessment period. The next decision is whether you need a change assessment, implementation support or a focused internal audit. This briefing is planning guidance and does not guarantee certification.
