PRACTICAL GUIDANCE
The starting point
An environmental transition plan needs operational evidence as well as revised documents. Separate the client deadline from certification-body milestones, then review the processes affected by the new edition.
The current UKAS milestones
ISO 14001:2026 was published on 15 April 2026. UKAS revision 2, dated 7 October 2026, sets 30 April 2027 for certification-body transition and 30 April 2029 for transition of certified clients. Its timeline gives 31 October 2027 as the stop date for new certifications to the previous edition.
The 7 October bulletin also moved the first tranche of accreditation transition decisions to 30 October 2026. These are accreditation milestones. They do not establish that your organisation, or every certification body, has completed its transition.
Review what changed in the operation
Our implementation approach starts with a current picture of the organisation’s activities. A transition is an opportunity to check whether the environmental aspect assessment still represents real materials, services, locations and outsourced work. This is an audit-planning recommendation, not a statement that every business needs an entirely new system.
Use a change register to link relevant revised requirements to actual controls. Look for evidence that responsibilities are understood and that monitoring supports decisions about performance.
- Trace one significant aspect through its controls, monitoring and response to exceptions.
- Check how procurement and external providers affect environmental outcomes.
- Revisit changes in sites, processes, products and interested-party expectations.
- Record why existing arrangements remain suitable where no change is needed.
Choose evidence that can be tested
A practical evidence set might include a recent operational change, a supplier decision, a monitoring result and a management-review action. Choose examples that reflect your own activities and agreed scope.
Where records are missing, identify the activity that will generate them and who owns it. Avoid marking an action complete solely because the environmental manual has a new date.
Agree the route with the certification body
Confirm the body’s accreditation transition status, your assessment route and its evidence expectations. Existing certificate validity and withdrawal of an older standard publication are separate questions; check the certificate and applicable transition arrangements.
Use an audit brief to identify the sites, aspects, external providers and planned changes that deserve attention. A readiness review supports preparation but does not make the certification decision.
